Don’t be so surprised if you notice a new ornament on your Christmas tree this year. Several shops at the ever-popular Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza are selling glass pickle ornaments that supposedly an old German tradition. Whether it is true or not, Chicagoans seem to be eating it up and these pickles are flying off the shelves out of the woven baskets.
The tag on the ornament says that it is an old German tradition to hide a pickle ornament in the tree and whichever child finds it gets an extra gift on Christmas morning. According to several urban myth sites online, this is a bunch of BS, and it probably is. I am sure the Germans are getting a good laugh as we all “ooh” and “ahh” over glass pickles, hiding them in our trees and patting ourselves on the backs for integrating an “old German” custom into our very American ways of celebrating the holiday. Yes, how worldly and cultured we are with our German pickles!
Just for a chuckle, check them out. They come in all shapes and sizes, colours and covered in glitter! Fun!

I was in the middle of Daley Plaza when the information was revealed: Chicago had the lowest amount of votes and thus was taken out of the running for the 2016 Olympics. As Ileana, my co-blogger would say, “Womp womp”. And that was exactly the sentiment of other Chicagoans who had spent the morning at DP waiting (im)patiently to see if Chicago would win the bid.
I think that this picture perfectly sums up how Chicagoans were feeling before the let down:
Look at those people on the jumbotron! Flags waving, mouths wide open to scream and yell their support. The guy in the forefront of the picture was so dang happy, his eyes are glistening with tears. People were all smiles and filled with Chicago pride and I was really happy to see so many people come together for something.
When we lost the bid, it was so unexpected and the announcer was so nonchalant as he blandly rattled off that we had the least amount of votes, people were silent. No boos. No jeering. No nothing. They all just…left.
It was a mass exodus from Daley Plaza as people tossed aside flags and fans with the Chicago 2016 logo on the concrete and said nothing. It was so barren after the announcement that a reporter from a Chinese station in Chi had to interview…ME. The only person who was obviously sticking around.
I expected to see a little more reaction from Chicagoans, but I didn’t. Most people just shrugged when I asked for a reaction on camera or said that since Chi was out of the running, they hoped Rio would get the bid.
It got me thinking: Did Chicagoans (not just the Obamas, Oprah and Billy Dec) really want the Olympics to be held here? There was, from the start, a huge pull from No Games Chicago, an organisation made up of volunteers who vehemently opposed the Olympics being held here.
What does everyone think?
I will post a video of reactions from the celebrations later! :-)

Daley Plaza's fountain bled Olympic orange for the bid day festivities Friday. Now that Chicago has lost, I wonder if the fountain will go back to normal, or if the city will keep it orange in honour of the Bears.

Day five started out with some seven grain sourdough and Stover’s Very Berry jam. What?! You mean you do not know of Stover’s?! Time out! Time to be educated.
Stover’s does not attend Green City Market. Instead, I have to visit them at either the Federal Plaza Market or Daley Plaza Market in the Loop on Tuesdays and Thursdays, respectively. They have so many different jams that I often just marvel in front of the huge layout. To prevent myself from drooling too much while I pick my poison, I generally just ask the advice of the friendly shop guy!
So after breakfast I left to go over to DePaul with Tim to attend a picnic. I know what you are thinking, that I immediately fell off the Locavore bandwagon! But I didn’t! Nope! Instead I brought along a homemade salad and a juicy, cold pear from Nichols Farm!
For dinner, along with not-so-local pasta, I had delicious sweet corn! Local and fabulous!
Oh! And I have had a lot of questions lately as to where my adorable apron came from that I wore to Saturday’s market!
It is from Jessie Steele who obviously excels in making the cutest aprons on the planet! As a matter of fact, I am on the hunt for a new apron that is equally sweet, so if anyone has any suggestions, just make a comment!
Also, I have another recipe idea for you guys, this time using River Valley Ranch’s Asparagus Spinach Dip. Thanks to River Valley Ranch’s shopguys for giving me this idea on Satuday!
Asparagus Spinach Pizza
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 pre-prepared pizza crust (or you can make yours with whole wheat, local flour!)
- 1 jar of asparagus spinach dip from River Valley Ranch
- 2 large heirloom tomatoes (try them from Tomato Mountain!), sliced into 1/4 inch slices
- 2 cups soft sheep’s milk or goat’s milk cheese
Heat oven to 450 degrees. Spread asparagus spinach dip over pizza crust then top with tomatoes. Bake for 8 – 10 minutes. As soon as you pull the pizza out of the oven, sprinkle the cheese evenly over the entire surface! The cheese will lightly melt!
Enjoy and see ya tomorrow!
